English

The mission of the English Department is to guide and encourage students in the study and practice of all aspects of the English language.  Our task is to help students master skills in order to read critically and appreciatively, to communicate clearly both in writing and speaking and to use all research tools available, both traditional and technological.  We provide all students with opportunities to express themselves creatively.  The most important result of our efforts is the students' understanding of their own nature and of the universality of the human experience.

The study of English stimulates the students' intellectual curiosity about both their own world and values and those of others and provides students with the tools to express their discoveries and judgments.  Through the study of literature, the English Department strives to stimulate the students' imaginations and social consciences and to instill confidence in their ability to communicate.

The students develop an understanding of and respect for the uniqueness and worth of each human being through the examination of literature.  They will grow as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, critical and contributing members of society, knowing that the preservation of our democracy depends on an informed, thoughtful citizenry.

Because the English Department believes that Bishop Fenwick as a Catholic school considers the total development of the individual student, we are committed to the development of a multileveled English curriculum which is responsive to the needs of the individual student, incorporates a variety of teaching styles and engages the student in individual and cooperative learning activities.
