Library - Freshmen Research Orientation

 

             Every freshman completes a library orientation program in cooperation with the English Department.  Freshman English teachers choose from three topics:

 

             The project is completed in four to five days.  Students are assigned to teams of two or three.

  • Day One – Students, the English teacher, and the librarian meet in the Zampell Computer Room.  Students are taught
  1. to search the electronic catalog
  2. to use some of the easier databases such as Grolier’s EncyclopediaSIRS Discoverer, and Big Chalk Electric Library, and
  3. to gather information from a specially prepared page with information on each topic. (The OdysseyGreat Expectations, and Romeo and Juliet)
  • Day Two – The students and their English teacher meet in the library.  Students are given a tour.  Then, they gather the books they found in the catalog on Day One.  Students begin to take notes.
  • Day Three – Students finish notes and begin to create posters for their presentations.
  • Day Four – Presentations are completely prepared and some teams begin to share their research with the class.
  • Day Five – The rest of the teams finish giving their presentations.
